VENEZUELA. Useful information for travel

Voyage in May 2011
The tour lasted just under three weeks.

The most important thing is to visit Venezuela to take into account the exchange rate . There is a real official rate and the street. While the official exchange rate is 1 € = 6 bolivars in the black market you get 10 Bs. So you CAN NOT get cash from ATM or paying with credit or debit card, and lost much money in change. It is best to carry euros (or dollars) and change in the numerous exchange offices or hotels. Ask first at various sites for the best rate.

Another issue to consider is insecurity. Should not be paranoid but be very careful. We visited Caracas and has nothing interesting and the city is by far more insecure. In the villages there is no problem (as always, everywhere), but in the cities shops are closed at sunset and the atmosphere is seedy. So it is better not to go out at night to avoid problems.

A tourist level, no doubt, the best is the Canaima National Park , where the Salto del Angel. Spectacular scenery.

We wanted to make the trek by Tepui Roraima , but finally gave up. Prices have doubled in recent years, so the less expensive option is taking a self-catering and cargo, which is quite hard. However, we do not get to complete a group to keep us the price and the weather was rainy. So I did not and do not repent, and that the budget is spent on Canaima and justified 100%.
