COLOMBIA. North Route

Trip in May 2011, after traveling Ecuador, northern Peru, the Amazon River and Venezuela. We had left a few months before from Bogota to the south.
In 21 days we were traveling north. We did not visit Tayrona and Cartagena (already knew).


Route. 21 days
 
-          Maicao (Guajira)
-          CapeCandle(Guajira)
-          Manaure (Guajira)
-          Taganga-Santa Marta (Magdalena)
-          Mompox (Bolivar)
-          Bucaramanga, Girón (Santander)
-          San Gil-Guan-Curití Barichara (Santander)

Total: 2,000 km approx.

MAICAO (Guajira)
-          Hotel : Venice. 25,000 pesos.
-          Transportation :
-          Maicao - Cabo de la Vela: 17,000 pesos. Jeep forward market. Out 11AM. Duration 5 h, stopping at Uribia.
-          Food : Several restaurants and cafes. At night, almost all closed. Food stalls in the street near the hotel.
-          Recommendations : border town, very commercial, dirty. Everything is closed, lonely, sordid evening. In the early morning, great excitement.


CABO DE LA VELA (Guajira)
 
In the "rancheria" many places to stay, very similar, similar prices.
 
-          Hotel : Aparanchi. 5,000 pesos / person and hang your own hammock. 10,000 to hang a hammock. Shared bathroom. Freshwater shower: $ 2,000 per 18 lt.
      Bungalows $ 30.000-50.000. with private bath and water included.
-          Food : $ 10,000. Breakfast: $ 6,000. In the "rancherias".
-          Transportation:
-          Cabo de la Vela - Uribia: $ 12,000. Jeep. Output 5AM. Duration 3 hours 
-          Uribia - Manaure: $ 4,000. Shared taxi. Every few minutes, once filled out. 30 min.
-          Views :
-          Beaches: El Faro (1h30 walk), the Pilon de Azúcar (1h walk). Possibility to go by jeep. Front of the rancheria is sea but no beach, is muddy.
-          Kite-surfing, a sport hosting offers. We do not ask.
-          Recommendations : Bring plenty of water and fruit, as in the stores is expensive. Sleeping bag, windy. It is far from it.
-          Landscape : Heat, wind. Arid, sandy soil, shrubs and cactus. Goats and cows. Fishermen. Indigenous Wayus. Smuggling of gasoline and food from Venezuela.


MANAURE (Guajira)
 
-          Hotel : Unuuipa. 25,000 pesos. Cold water.
-          Transportation :
-          Manaure-Riohacha: $ 13,000. Shared taxi. They fill up and leave. Duration 1 hour
-          Riohacha-Santa Marta: $ 15,000. Ochoa. Miscellaneous. Duration 2 h.
-          Views :
-          Salinas. Free.
-          Beach and kiosks: very dirty.
-          Food : Many restaurants and cafes in the main street.


TAGANGA (Magdalena)
 
-          Accommodation : in a friend's house. There are many hotels. From $ 20,000.
-          Food : many restaurants.
-          Transportation :
-          Santa Marta - Taganga: buseta. $ 1,200. Every time.
-          Santa Marta - Rodadero: idem.
-          Views :
-          Playa Grande, 20 minutes walking.  Or by boat (5 min.). Playa Blanca, by boat. Small beach in Taganga same.
-          Taganga: Scuba many schools (we did).
-          Santa Marta. Museo del Banco deRepublic, free. Colonial center.
-          Rodadero, beach resort of Santa Marta.
-          Tayrona National Park, previously visited a few years ago. Now is privatized (Aviatur) and expensive. Fabulous place, beaches, scenery, villages, Indian village (Arhuacos).
-          Landscape : heat, humidity, Caribbean. Use insect repellent at night. Shrubs and cacti. Foothills Sierra Santa Marta very lush and green.


MOMPOX (BOLIVAR)
 
-          Hotel : La casa blanca. 25,000 pesos with bathroom and AC. Cold water.
-          Transportation :
-          Santa Marta Mompox: Collective (Van) door to door. $ 80,000. Output: 3 AM. Duration: 8 hours or more, depending on the road (unpaved last part, including slab on the Magdalena river crossing 5 min).
-          Mompox-Bank: canoe (boat). $ 35,000. Departure: 6:30 AM. Duration 2h.
-          The Bank-Bucaramanga: $ 40,000. Copetran. Miscellaneous. Exit 10 AM. Duration: 10 h.
-          Food : few restaurants. Close to pier. In the afternoon, fast food stalls in the Plaza Santo Domingo.
-          Landscape : Magdalena River. Heat and humidity. Colonial City, patios, plazas and churches. Watermarks, rocking. At least for 2 nights. Far from it.


BUCARAMANGA  (Santander)
 
-          Hotel : Tobago. $ 20,000. Cold water. Many hotels in areaThe Island (Near the San Andresito).
-          Transportation :
-          Bucaramanga - Girón: $ 1,550. Miscellaneous. 30 min.
-          Bucaramanga - San Gil: $ 13,000. Miscellaneous. From terminal or from "Daddy I want pineapple." Duration: 3 hours
-          Bucaramanga: taxi Terminal to La Isla (hotels area) $ 6,500. La Isla to "Daddy" $ 7,000.
-          Views :
-          Giron: colonial center. Cemetery, squares. Nice and cheap restaurants.
-          Panachi (PN Chicamocha) on the road to San Gil, 2 h of Bucaramanga, $ 9,000 - To San Gil, 1 h $ 8,000. Entry: $ 15,000; cable car $ 38,000. We did not go. Is a theme park.
-          Landscape green, hilly. Temperate climate, 960 m high.

SAN GIL (Santander)
 
The city has specialized in adventure sports. Many companies, cheap.
 
-          Hotel : Antares. $ 20,000. Cold water.
-          Transportation :
-          San Gil - Barichara / Guane: 3,800 / $ 5,500. Every 2 hours. Duration: 1 hour. Terminalito.
-          San Gil - Curití: $ 2,100. Every time. Duration: 30 min. Terminalito.
-          San Gil - Bogotá: $ 30,000. Duration: 7 hours. Berlinas del Fonce, Coomotor
-          San Gil: $ 3,000 taxi to the terminal.
-          Food : restaurants. Arepa Santander, oread meat. Hormigas culonas.
-          Views :
-          Gallineral Park: $ 6,000.
-          Barichara: colonial town. Iglesias, gazebo.
-          Guane: bridle path from Barichara; 1h15 walking.
-          Curití: colonial town. Craft fique. Swimming area with slides stone Pescaderito, 1 h walk.
 
-          Adventure sports: many companies (only 4 teams have paragliding), same prices, cheap. We contracted with Blue Planet (along Gallineral).
 
      * Rafting Fonce River : 20,000 pesos. Duration 1 h 30.
      * Paragliding: In Curití, about 15 minutes of flight: $ 60,000 in the afternoon. In the Chicamocha Cañon are 30 min flight $ 170,000, in the morning (we did). Inc. transport.
      * They also offer canyoning, rappelling, etc.
