COLOMBIA. South Route

Voyage in February 2011



 Route in 13 days:
 
-         Bogotá
-         San Agustin (Huila)
-         Tatacoa (Huila)
-         Tierradentro / San Andres Pisimbala (Cauca)
-         Popayán. Thermal Coconuco (Cauca)
-         Pasto. Lagoon Cocha (Nariño)
-         Ipiales - Las Lajas (Nariño)
 
1,800 km (average speed: 45 km / h by bus)

 
SAN AGUSTIN (Huila)

-           Hotel : El Jardin. $ 20,000 room with shared bathroom. Cold water. Use of kitchen. Filtered water.
-           Transportation :
* Bogota - San Agustin: Coomotor. $ 53,000. Output 9PM. Duration 9:30.
* San Agustín - Neiva: Coomotor. $ 23,000. 5:00 a.m. departure (several) Duration 5h 
Views : 
Archaeological parks: San Agustin: $ 10,000, combined with Alto Los Idolos $ 16,000.
Hours: 8AM-6PM (Lavapatas 4PM). 2 days of validity, but we went 3 days without problem.
-          Jeep: narrow Magdalena River, Obando, Idols, Salto Bordones, Alto Las Piedras, Salto Mortiño. $ 28,000. Duration: day, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
-          Horse Tours: $ 60,000 (we did).
-          Walk from San Agustin:
  *  45 min up to Archaeological Park (also bus)
  * Archaeological sites: $ 1,000 5 min bus to El Tablón + 10 min, 30 min Chaquira (canon view),  La pelota - El ThePurutal (1.30 h); Archaeological Park (1.30 h) .
  * Alto de Los Idolos: bus (5 min) before Tablón; down the Magdalena River; up to Granada; Alto Los Idolos (we did not). Aprox. 3 h.

-           Landscape : Rural area. Scattered houses. Crops cane mills, fruit-lulo, coffee, cows. Height1,730 m, Warm-temperate climate.
-           Food : Several restaurants, cafes, supermarkets in St. Augustine.
 
 
TATACOA (Huila)

-           Hotel : There are several accommodations. We stayed in a remote, the Rock of Constantine. Cabins too basic, shared bathroom, cold water. 2 people $ 20,000. Piscinita. Food. Well water. Several km main road, so walking is not warranted. Shuttle service to Neiva 15,000.
-           Transportation :
or       Neiva-Villa Vieja: Coomotor $ 8,000. Miscellaneous. 1h.
or       Villa Old-Observatory: mototaxi $ 30,000 4 people.
-           Visit : The most interesting area in front of the observatory.
-           Landscape : dry tropical dry forest. Heat450 mhigh. Cactus. Chivas.
-           Tips : Bring food, although in accommodation sold. Repellent. Sunscreen. The interesting area is small.
 

 
SAN ANDRES DE PISIMBALA - TIERRADENTRO (Cauca)

-     Accommodation : There are 2 choices: stay in the village (above), or down, compared to the archaeological site. We stayed in the village, supertranquilo, and there are more options for walking. Below there are only hotels and admission to the archaeological park. Walking is a half-hour climb to the village.
Few shops in the village.
-     Hotel : La Portada (Leonardo). 15,000 pesos with shared bath, cold water. With private bathrooms with hot water  30,000. Food:  6,000 pesos. Breakfast: 3,000 pesos (coffee, arepas, etc)
 
-          In La Plata: Hotel Iguazu  20,000 pesos. Several restaurants, market.
 
-           Transportation :
-         Neiva - La Plata: 15,000 pesos. Several buses. Duration 2h30.
-          La Plata - San - Andres Pisimbalá: jeep. $ 10,000. 10 a.m. (6:00 a.m. another. Until 6pm). 
           Duration 2h.   Unpaved road.
-          San Andres - Inzá:  1,000 pesos. 8:00 a.m. (various). Duration 30 min. Unpaved.
-          Inza - Popayán:  10,000 pesos. 9:00 a.m. (various). Duration 5 hours Unpaved sections.
 
-           Views : - Church of San Andrés de Pisimbalá in the center of town. Hermosa.
-          Archaeological Park  10,000 pesos, several archaeological sites and Museum, Ethnological Museum.  The ticket is valid for 2 days but we 3 without problem. 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
 
         Walking tours:
*      San Andres de Pisimbala to Museums: 25 min down.
*      Arqueological Museum to Segovia (most important): 30 min.
*     Segovia - El Duende: 15 min.
*      El Duende to El Tablón: 30 min.
*      El Duende to San Andres de Pisimbalá: 45 min.
*      San Andres de Pisimbalá  to El Tablón Board: 20 min.
*      San Andres de Pisimbalá  to Alto de San Andres to Aguacate to museums: up 1.30 +1 h down.
 
- Horseback riding:  5,000 pesos / h.
-           Landscape: Rural, low density. Indigenous communities.
             Coffee, fruit, livestock. Height 1,800 m, Warm-temperate climate.
 

 
POPAYAN (Cauca)

-           Hotel : Capital.  12,000 pesos, shared bathroom.   Colonial, central (calle7con race 5). Basic.
-           Transportation :
-          Popayán to Pasto:  20,000 pesos. Several daily. Duration 5 hours
-           Views :
-          Conial Center, churches, museums,  patojo town, bridge.
-          Thermal Coconuco. Boiling water (sulfur). Entry  2,000 pesos. Bus from Popayan:  3,000 pesos, then you have to walk 1,5 hour a nice way, nothing hard. You can take motorbike for 2,000 pesos
-          Volcano Purace 4650 m (We did the wrong time): 4 + 3 h. Bus to Pilimbalá.
-           Landscape: green, temperate climate 1760 m.


PASTO (Nariño)

-           Hotel : Prado.  16,000 pesos with private bathroom. Downtown (Carrera 22 with Calle 14).
-           Transportation :
-           Pasto to Ipiales:  7,000 pesos. Several daily. Duration 1h30.
-          - Visits :
-          Lagoon Cocha: Bus  3,500 pesos. Several groups at all times. Duration 1h. Boat to the island (go and back) 15,000 pesos. Entry $ 1,000.
-          Volcan Galeras4,250 m(We were not due to bad weather)
-          Volcan Azufral4,000 m(Idem).
-           Landscape : Green potatoes. cold weather,2,500 mhigh. Volcanic zone. City unremarkable. Caution night.
-          Food : Many restaurants and cafes. Quimbolitos. TroutLa Cocha.
 

 
IPIALES  -LAS LAJAS (Nariño)

-           Hotel : 10,000 pesos. Poor quality, and we don´t remember the name. Several of style. There is a colonial, clean and nice, but expensive ( 35,000 ).
-           Transportation :
-          Ipiales - Las Lajas:  1,600 pesos. 15 min.
-          Ipiales - Rumichaca (Ecuador):  2,000 pesos. 15 min.
-           Meals : Several restaurants and cafes. Many closed in low season and midweek.
