ECUADOR. Useful information for travel

Voyage in March 2011.

In general, Ecuador is not as cheap as before dollarization. However, transport is still well priced and good roads. The hotels are more expensive than in Colombia, but they are of better quality.

Our route was north to south through the mountains, do not visit the coast. So the information that we are limited to the route we took, always inside.

- Transport terminals : Right. On the outskirts of cities and towns. Several transport companies. Numerous buses all the time. Same prices. No need to book.

- Bus : More or less modern. Cheap, half price $ 1 / h. Calculate long travel times, average speed:50 km / h, although as the country is small it is not a problem. Many pickers up with all kinds of food to the buses.

- Roads : In general dual carriageway. The Pan American is part of the tour unfolded. Relatively short distances   between cities. Paved roads, even at high altitudes and in very good condition. South of Vilcabamba, are paving to cross the border with Peru .. Cuenca road sections also in works (March 2011).

- Urban transport : minibuses and taxis (very cheap, approx. 1 $).

Hotels : Fixed relatively new. Average price: $ 10 / double room. Often wifi and kitchen.

- Food : Positions in the markets. Current menus in restaurants. Broiler chickens.  Chifas (Chinese food).

Water : Generally safe across the hills. Inquire at each location. I almost never buy bottled water.

- Landscape : 3 well-defined areas: coastal, mountain, jungle. Just drove around the mountains.

- Tourist Offices : Good publications are enough handouts for all, but often lack specific data transport, prices, routes, so they are not very useful.
