The train from Cairo to Luxor (and vice versa) usually without a quota, or so they say at the station. It seems that there is corruption because through agencies or hotels, if you get tickets, even for the same day, but much more expensive.
When we went to the station, the officer tells us that if no train for the day we wanted, but wanting to buy tickets, tells us that no train but there is no quota!!
Recommendation. To have option of getting train Cairo - Luxor, you have to buy several days prior to travel. That is, will be the first thing you do when you get to Cairo and so you make a program or plan B.
The journey Luxor - Cairo but is less saturated, also must be purchased in advance. From Luxor is also the option of being on guard at the station to access a share last minute.
We opted for Plan B in the 2 routes. From Cairo we went to Luxor via the oases (see chronic another entry), by bus, bus and taxi.
And do not get train Luxor - Cairo, decided to travel overnight by bus to Dahab in the Red Sea.
